Fit a picture rail to a metal stud wall

Mark a level line, check what's behind the wall, then fix picture rail using the right fixing for your wall type.

PIC-01Decide the height and mark your lineMeasure down from the ceiling, not up from the floor, because ceilings are rarely level. 300mm below the ceiling is a common height for a 2.4m room; go lower for a higher ceiling. Mark dots every 1m along the wall with a spirit level or laser level, then join them into one continuous pencil line, checking corners meet at the same height.

PIC-02Work out what the wall is made of and what's behind itKnock along the wall — solid brick or block sounds dull and dense, plasterboard sounds hollow. Run a stud detector or magnet along your marked line to track screw heads and find studs; a line of hollow sound between studs with solid hits every 400mm or 600mm means a stud wall. Drill a small pilot hole at a proposed fixing point: pale timber dust means a timber stud, fine grey swarf means a metal stud, and dust with no resistance change usually means plasterboard between fixings or dot-and-dab. Cables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a wall, so use a detector but still assume something might be there — detectors miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, behind metal-backed board, or outside the usual safe zones, and a metal stud frame can confuse a cheap detector further. Before you drill, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe; if you have any doubt, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit first, and turn the water off at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry water.

PIC-03Mark your fixing points along the lineOn a timber or metal stud wall, mark the centre of every stud you found along the line — usually every 400mm or 600mm. On solid brick, block, dot-and-dab or lath and plaster, space fixing points evenly at around 400mm–450mm along the whole run, since you're fixing into the wall itself rather than a frame. Keep fixing points at least 50mm away from any internal corner so the mitre isn't weakened.
PIC-04Cut the picture rail to length with mitred cornersMeasure each wall run at the marked height, not at floor level, since walls are rarely perfectly parallel. Cut internal corners at a 45° mitre so the two pieces meet in a neat point, and cut external corners with the mitres facing the opposite way. Dry-fit every piece around the room before fixing anything, and number the pieces in order so you don't mix them up.

PIC-05Fix the rail using the right fixing for your wallTimber stud: pre-drill a pilot hole and drive a 50–60mm wood screw into the centre of the stud. Metal stud: use a self-drilling metal-stud screw or a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor rated for the weight — never a plain plastic wall plug or ordinary wood screw, as either strips straight through 0.5mm steel; where a fixing point falls between studs on plasterboard, use a plasterboard toggle rated for the load instead. Dot-and-dab: use a fixing long enough to pass through the plasterboard and the adhesive dabs into the solid masonry behind, typically 60–75mm, so the rail isn't just hanging off the board. Solid brick or block: drill with a masonry bit matched to your plug size (e.g. 6mm bit for a 6mm plug) to a depth of 40–50mm, insert a wall plug (Rawlplug), then screw. Lath and plaster: locate the timber laths or studs behind the plaster with your detector and pilot-hole test, pre-drill to stop the old plaster cracking, and use a screw long enough to bite into the timber rather than relying on the plaster alone. Before you drill anything, keep your stopcock and consumer unit access in mind from the previous step — stop immediately if a hole brings up damp dust, discoloured swarf, or you smell anything unusual.

PIC-06Fill screw holes and mitre gapsFill any visible screw holes and small gaps at the mitred corners with wood filler, pushing it in fully. Once dry, sand lightly with fine sandpaper so the surface is flush with the rail. Run a thin bead of decorator's caulk along the top and bottom edge where the rail meets the wall for a neat, shadow-free line.

PIC-07Prime, paint and clear upPrime any bare wood, then apply two coats of your chosen paint once the filler and caulk are fully dry. Remove masking tape while the final coat is still slightly tacky for a clean edge. Vacuum up dust and offcuts, and dispose of any masonry dust or drilling waste with your household rubbish.
