Fit a picture rail to a timber stud wall

Plan, cut and fix a picture rail around a room, choosing the right fixing for whichever wall you meet.

PR-01Plan the height and cutting listDecide how high you want the rail - a traditional height is about 300mm below the ceiling, but pick whatever suits the room. Measure the perimeter of the room in metres and add 10% for waste and mitre cuts. Sketch a rough plan showing where lengths meet at internal and external corners, so you know how many mitres you'll need.

PR-02Gather your tools and materialsYou'll need a mitre saw or mitre block and tenon saw, a spirit level, a stud detector, a drill with wood and masonry bits, a hammer, panel pins, wood glue, decorator's filler and caulk. Buy picture rail moulding to length, but hold off buying fixings until you've confirmed your wall type in the next step - it decides what you need.

PR-03Mark a level line around the roomMeasure down from the ceiling at several points along each wall and pencil-mark each one. Use a spirit level to join the marks into one continuous, level line all the way round - don't trust the ceiling itself, it may not be level. A laser level speeds this up, but a spirit level and a straight batten works just as well.

PR-04Work out what's behind the wallRun your stud detector along the marked line. A regular change in reading, or a magnet catching on a line of screw heads, means a timber or metal stud wall. A dull, solid knock with no hollow sound means solid brick or block. A bouncy, hollow sound over a slightly uneven surface suggests dot-and-dab or lath and plaster. On a stud wall, drill a small pilot hole at low speed and check the dust - fine pale dust means timber, fine grey swarf means a metal stud frame, which is common in flats and anything built or refitted since the 1990s. Cables and pipes can run almost anywhere, not just in the usual safe zones - a detector helps but can miss cables that are deep, in metal conduit, or behind metal-backed plasterboard, and a metal stud frame confuses cheap detectors further. Find your stopcock now, usually under the kitchen sink, and check it turns freely. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before you drill, and turn off the water at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry water.

PR-05Cut and mitre the lengthsTransfer your cutting list to the moulding, marking each length on the face that will show. Cut internal corners with the mitre saw set to 45° facing one way, external corners the opposite way, and butt-join straight runs on long walls. Test-fit each piece against the level line before cutting the next, and glue mitred joints with wood glue for a tight, near-invisible seam.

PR-06Fix into solid brick or blockDrill at each fixing point along your line, spacing fixings roughly every 400-500mm. Use a 6mm masonry bit for a 6mm wall plug and matching screw, drilling to at least 40mm depth so the plug is fully supported. Vacuum the dust from the hole, push the plug in flush, then drive the screw through the rail into the plug.

PR-07Fix into a timber stud wallFind the centre of each stud along your line with the detector, marking every stud that falls near a fixing point. Drill a pilot hole through the rail and plasterboard into the centre of the stud, then drive a 40-50mm wood screw straight through - never fix into the plasterboard skin alone. Where a fixing point falls between studs, either move it to the nearest stud or glue a short timber packer behind the rail there instead.

PR-08Fix into a metal stud wallOnce fine grey swarf from your pilot hole confirms a metal stud, use self-drilling metal-stud screws driven straight through the rail into the centre of the stud - never a wood screw or a plain plastic plug, both strip straight through 0.5mm steel. Where a fixing point falls between studs, use a toggle-type hollow-wall anchor rated for the rail's weight, not a light-duty plug. A picture rail is light enough for this, but never rely on metal studs or plasterboard toggles for anything heavier that pulls away from the wall - that needs a timber noggin fitted between the studs, or a fixing through to solid backing.

PR-09Fix into dot-and-dab plasterboardDot-and-dab plasterboard sits on adhesive dabs over solid masonry, with a gap behind it that can reach 40-50mm in places. Use a long fixing - a 75-90mm masonry screw or plug-and-screw - that passes through the plasterboard, the air gap and the dab, reaching at least 30mm into the masonry behind. Drill slowly and hold a spare fixing against the drill bit first to check you've got enough length before you commit to the hole.

PR-10Fix into lath and plasterLath and plaster is old plaster keyed onto thin timber laths - it's soft and brittle, so drill slowly to avoid cracking it. Find the timber studs behind the laths with your detector, or by the change in sound as you tap, and fix into the stud centres with a 40-50mm wood screw, just as you would on a modern timber stud wall. Don't fix into the laths alone; they're too weak to carry a picture rail's weight and the angled pull it puts on a fixing.

PR-11Fill, caulk and finishFill screw or pin holes with decorator's filler and sand smooth once dry. Run a bead of decorator's caulk along the top and bottom edge where the rail meets the wall and ceiling, smoothing it with a wet finger. Leave everything to dry fully before you paint.

PR-12Tidy upVacuum dust from the floor and windowsills and wipe down the skirting. Store any leftover moulding and fixings for future repairs. Give the rail a gentle tug at a few points along its length to check it's secure before you hang anything from it.
