BM-05Find pipes and cables, and know how to stop themCables and pipes can run almost anywhere in a bathroom, not just in the usual safe zones — a detector can miss deep cables, anything in metal conduit, and anything behind metal-backed board, and a metal stud frame confuses cheap detectors further. Run the detector over every mark before drilling, then still drill cautiously and stop the moment you feel resistance change or see anything odd come out of the hole. Before you start, find your stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink) and check it turns freely, so you can shut the water off fast if you hit a pipe. If you have any doubt at all, isolate the relevant circuit at the consumer unit before drilling, and turn off the water at the stopcock before cutting into anything that could carry it.
